Insights from TEMATYS on the Dynamic Growth of Global and European Photonics Markets at Photonics Partnership Annual Meeting 2024

Tematys‘ Partner, Thierry Robin, recently participated in the Photonics Partnership Annual Meeting 2024 in Brussels organized by Photonics21. The event brought together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers from around the world to discuss the future of photonics technology in Europe and beyond.

The meeting’s highlight was the presentation of Tematys’ global photonics market study titled “Insights into the Dynamic Photonics Market (2019-2022).” The study revealed significant growth in the photonics industry, with European production reaching €124.6 billion in 2022 and creating 35,000 jobs during the study period. Despite global economic challenges, the Photonics industry shows no signs of slowing down.

Some take-away messages from the report:

  • The European photonics industry grew at 6.5%/year from 2019 to 2022 to reach €125 billion
  • Europe shares 2nd position with the US with 15% of the market share
  • Thanks to a very dynamic R&I, the European Photonics industry is still competitive and exports >50% of its products
  • The majority of European photonics companies have still supply chain issues & rising supply costs, impacting competitivity and innovation capacity
  • Europe’s market share has slightly declined from 2005 to 2022 along with a huge growth for China
  • There is a huge gap in capital investment in Europe compare to US and Asia indicating a need for greater speed
